Why do people soak brats in beer? ›

Bratwurst is a raw, pork-based sausage that must be thoroughly cooked before serving. The idea behind soaking bratwurst in hot beer prior to grilling is they cook all the way through ahead of time, so the grill master needn't worry about serving an undercooked pork sausage.

Why you shouldn't boil brats before grilling? ›

Sindelar said parboiling speeds up the unfolding process and can result in a mushy meat texture, the development of rubbery casings and separate the casing from the sausage. So, there you have it. It's settled science.

Why do people boil brats before cooking? ›

Before grilling the brats, parboil them on the stove or in a cast-iron skillet on the grill. This will help to precook the inside of the brats and make sure that they don't burst open on the grill, releasing all of the flavorful juices. Place the brats in a skillet and add a cold liquid 3/4 of the way up the brats.

What is the difference between brats and beer brats? ›

A beer brat is when you boil uncooked brats in a couple of cans of beer to fully cook it on the stovetop. Oftentimes, they are finished off on the grill. We truly believe beer brats are superior to any other kind of brat because they are so dang delicious.

Do I have to boil brats before frying? ›

Brats should be boiled prior to grilling or frying because unlike hotdogs, brats are a thicker sausage and can cook unevenly. Boiling brats also reduces the overall grilling time - an important consideration when trying to feed a hungry crowd.

Should beer brats be pink in the middle? ›

However you choose to cook bratwurst, be sure the sausages are cooked all the way through. They should register 160 degrees F on an instant-read thermometer, or you can cut into one with the tip of a paring knife and check that the meat is no longer raw and dark-pink; it should be moist and juicy and very light pink.

How do you know when beer brats are done? ›

Simmer the brats for 10-12 minutes in beer, then grill them for 5 to 10 minutes. The bratwurst will have an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees F when done. Look for developed color with deep brown grill marks.

Why are Johnsonville brats so good? ›

Does boiling brats in beer make a difference? ›

    - Beer: Cooking sausages in beer can impart a unique, slightly bitter, and malty flavor to the sausages. The beer can infuse the sausages with its own taste, which can vary depending on the type of beer used (e.g., lager, stout, ale). This method often results in a richer and more complex flavor profile.

For the beer, use a lager, which has a clean, crisp, not-too-bitter taste. Lager is a family of beers that includes bright lagers, amber lagers, dark lagers, Oktoberfests, and pilsners. I use Sam Adams Oktoberfest, but Budweiser, Bud Light, Coors Light, and Miller Lite are all good options.

Jonsonville is an excellent, more readily available choice if noting else strikes your fancy. Beef or pork. Leinenkugel's Original Beer, Authentic Wisconsin. Other choices are cheap 3.2% swill such as Old Milwaukee, or if it's the right time of year, Leinenkugel's Oktoberfest.

Why cook brats in beer? ›

Less time on the grill makes the brat less likely to dry out, and some pre-soakers believe the brat soaks up enough beer to influence the flavor and juiciness. The beer also makes the sausage casings more pliable and less likely to split.
