Steak Tips Recipe

This SirloinSteak Tips Recipe will be a staple in your house for years to come. My family requests this recipe at least once a week because it's their favorite way to eat steak. It is so easy, so I happily oblige! I love to serve them with cauliflower Mac and cheese, Keto coleslaw, or Loaded cauliflower rice casserole.

This recipe uses sirloin, but some other options would be ribeye steak or beef tenderloin (filet mignon), but I would not use such high-quality meat for this recipe. I think sirloin would be the best because it's still a good quality steak but not as expensive. You're the boss, so use whatever tender beef you want!

What you need

This easy sirloin steak tips recipe uses simple ingredients, but I provideswap optionsif you want to make them gluten-free.The full recipe card with exact measurements is toward the bottom of the page.

This simple recipe only uses four ingredients! (salt and pepper are generally not included in ingredient counts.) I feel like anything more would take away from that delicious beefy flavor. When I eat steak, I want to taste all that umami beef and only add ingredients to enhance it. Here are the ingredients you will need.

  • 2-3 pounds Sirloin steak - I wouldn't go with a cheaper cut for this recipe. This steak is cooked quickly, so you need a tender cut of beef. Something cheaper will usually be tougher to chew (definitely skip stew meat!). We want tender steak bites! More expensive cuts of steak would be good, like a New York strip steak, ribeye steak, or filet mignon...but I'm not sure I would turn that beautiful meat into steak tips.
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce -This sauce is commonly used on beef, and it brings out the beefy flavor of the sirloin and tenderizes the meat while it marinates for a bit. Note: Some Worcestershire sauces are not gluten-free, so check your labels if this is a requirement for you.
  • ½ teaspoon Garlic powder - To give these steak bites a nice garlic flavor, but not too much. I prefer a powder over fresh garlic so it sticks to the meat and seasons it well.
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt - If you use less coarse salt, like table salt, you will need half the amount.
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper -freshly ground is preferred
  • 2 tablespoons oil - Any oil will do. I like to use avocado oil for high-heat cooking so it doesn't smoke. You could also use vegetable oil, olive oil, or canola oil. I would not recommend butter, as it burns quickly.

How to cook sirloin steak tips

Step 1 - Use a sharp knife to cut the sirloin steak into bite-sized pieces (about 1 to 1.5 inches). You don't have to worry about slicing against the grain because we are cutting these into cubes. Transfer the steak to a medium size mixing bowl.

Step 2 - Season the steak tips with the marinade ingredients. Toss with tongs to coat the steak well with the marinade. Let marinate for 15-30 minutes. For great flavor, marinate for up to 24 hours.

Step 3 -These steak bites must be cooked at high temperatures for the best results. Heat a large skillet over high heat. When the skillet is hot, pour in the oil.

Note: You will want to use a large heavy pan, such as a cast iron skillet, to get maximum browning on your steak bites without overcooking.

Step 4 - Carefully add the sirloin tips to the hot skillet in a single layer. If your skillet is large enough, you may be able to fit all of the meat, but do not crowd the pan, or else they will steam, and there is a good chance they will not get golden brown. You may need to cook these in batches.

Stir the steak every 30 seconds to 1 minute to ensure it is evenly cooked on all sides. Let cook for 4-5 minutes. Remove from the pan with a slotted spoon or tongs to a serving dish. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Note: If you want to ensure your steak bites cook to a specific internal temperature like rare or medium-rare, you can use an instant-read meat thermometer inserted in the center of the steak pieces. Check after cooking for 3-4 minutes.

Can these delicious steak bites be made in an air fryer?

Yes! To make these steak tips in an air fryer:

  • Cut and marinate the steak just as we did above. Preheat your air fryer to 400F for 5 minutes. Add the steak to the basket and cook for 4-6 minutes, depending on how you like the doneness of your steak.
  • Check out my recipe for air fryer steak bites and mushrooms!

Expert Tips

  • Bite-sized pieces of sirloin steak are great, but don't make them too small, or they will overcook before they get brown.
  • Make sure your pan is nice and hot before adding the oil.
  • Don't overcrowd your cast iron pan while cooking. This will result in steamed steak instead of giving you delicious steak tips with a nice brown crust. Brown food tastes good!
  • Letting the beef tips marinate for at least 15 minutes adds to the flavor and also adds to the tenderness! You can also let them marinate in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

Storage and serving suggestions

  • Keep the leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  • Serve them with a side of caramelized onions, sautéed mushrooms, mashed potatoes, or a salad for a low-carb family dinner.
  • My personal favorite is served with barbecue sauce and a side of keto coleslaw. I like to make a double batch to have enough for meal prep.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons avocado oil, or olive oil
  • 2 Pounds Top Sirloin steak, cut into 1.5 inch cubes
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • ½ teaspoon Garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon Black pepper
  • 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce, *see notes

Instructions

  • Place the steak bites in a large bowl and mix in the salt, garlic powder, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Cover and set aside for 15-30 minutes, or refrigerate for up to 24 hours.

  • Heat a heavy bottom skillet (preferably a cast-iron pan) over high heat. Add the Avocado oil to the pan.

  • When the oil just starts to smoke, add ⅓ to half of the steak bites, being careful not to crowd the pan.

  • Let cook, stirring every 30 seconds to 1 minute, so all of the sides develop a brown crust.

  • Remove from the pan and continue with the rest of the steak bites.

  • Let the cooked steak bites rest for 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Some Worcestershire sauces are not gluten-free so be sure to check your labels.
  • Bite-sized pieces of sirloin steak are great, but don't make them too small, or else they will over cook before they get brown.
  • Make sure your pan is nice and hot before adding the oil.
  • Don't over crowd your cast iron pan while cooking. This will result in steamed steak instead of giving you delicious steak tips with a nice brown crust.
  • Letting the beef tips marinate for at least 15 minutes not only ads to the flavor, it ads to the tenderness! You can also let them marinate in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. No need to bring them to room temperature when you are ready to cook them. That is actually a myth.

Made these tonight with one small change, replaced the fresh garlic wit about a tablespoon of better than bouillon roasted garlic base with the soy & Worcestershire. They were amazing over fluffy rice but would be equally delicious over mashed potatoes or fries.

This was excellent! I looked over several recipes that all had exorbitant amounts of soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce, whereas this one was a realistic amount of the latter. Though I did add a splash of low sodium soy sauce. I marinated at room temp for about 30 minutes. Smoking hot cast iron pan, cooked as directed! Added sliced bell pepper and red onion. Yum! Perfect! Thank you!! 🙂

FAQs

How should sirloin tips be cooked? ›

Just heat up some oil in a heavy pan (like a cast-iron skillet), and sear your steak tips for two to three minutes a side, until they reach an internal temperature of 130°F. Give them a rest for eight minutes, then toss them in your favorite sauce for an easy dinner.

What makes steak tips tender? ›

Marinating. No matter what cut of beef you select, marinating your sirloin tips is often the way to go. Although a dry rub works wonderfully, marinating your steak will enhance the already tender cut of beef into a melt in your mouth meal.

What is the difference between sirloin tips and sirloin steak? ›

Well, they are both boneless, despite their names. The top sirloin comes from the sirloin of the beef and is more tender. The sirloin tip, however, comes from the round and is a little tougher and leaner in its marbling. Additionally, there is a ridge of fat that runs along the top of the boneless top sirloin steak.

How to cook marinated steak tips in a frying pan? ›

Place the steak tips in the pan and cook them for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until they are browned and crispy on the outside. Make sure not to overcrowd the pan, as this can cause the steak tips to steam instead of sear.

How do you make sirloin tip tender? ›

For a lean cut like beef sirloin tip steak, it is best to cook it rare to medium-rare for the most tender texture. Resting the steak before serving will allow the juices to redistribute within the meat before serving, making it more tender. Thinly slice the meat against the grain to make it less chewy.

How do you keep sirloin tips tender? ›

Follow the recipe when it comes to marinating time. Salt: Rubbing steak tips with a healthy dose of salt can help to tenderize them as well; salt helps break down the protein cells in the meat. Slow Cook: As with any meat, cooking steak tips low and slow will yield impressively tender results.

Do steak tips need to be marinated? ›

Marinating a steak before cooking serves two purposes: It helps tenderize the meat and adds just the right amount of flavor. Some top-quality steaks can go without a marinade, since they're already full of meaty flavor and, with the right prep, end up juicy and tender without any help from a marinade.

Why are my sirloin tips tough? ›

Overcooking: One of the most common reasons for tough steak is overcooking. Cooking the steak for too long or at too high a temperature can cause the proteins in the meat to become tough and chewy. It's essential to cook sirloin steak to the desired level of doneness without exceeding it.

What is the fastest way to tenderize beef tips? ›

Wet Brining with Baking Soda to Tenderize Meat

Whereas an oversaturated saltwater brine might make your cut less filet-like, a baking soda wet brine expedites the tenderizing process and limits the potential for oversaturation.

What is another name for sirloin tip? ›

Although its name suggests otherwise, this cut comes from the Round primal, and is found on the front end of the rear leg. Often fabricated into roasts, which are great when braised, but can also be cut into steaks or used for Ground Beef. Also known as Knuckle and formerly known as Round Tip.

Is sirloin tip better than ribeye? ›

Ribeyes have a higher fat content than sirloin steaks, so they don't fare as well on the grill. For a good old smoky flavor or some barbecue grilling, the sirloin is your best choice because it's usually a thinner cut that can cook faster without drying out.

What is the best meat for sirloin tips? ›

Sirloin or Tenderloin cuts are best for making beef tips on the stove top as they don't require as much low and slow cooking to render down and tenderize. Tender Cuts of Meat: Sirloin, Flank, Ribeye, Tenderloin. Tougher Cuts of Meat: Chuck Roast, Rump Roast, Brisket. (Best suited for slow cooking.)

Does sirloin tip need to be marinated? ›

Minimum Marinating Time: To ensure that the marinade imparts its flavors and tenderizes the meat, it's recommended to marinate sirloin tip steaks for a minimum of 4 hours. However, if you want to maximize the flavor infusion, overnight marinating is the way to go.

How to cook sirloin tips indoors? ›

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a tablespoon of oil. Once the oil is hot, add the steak tips and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until browned. Reduce the heat to medium and continue cooking until the steak tips reach your desired level of doneness.

Do you pan fry steaks with oil or butter? ›

Is it better to pan fry steak in butter or oil? A well marbled steak actually has enough fat in it that you don't need to put any extra oil or butter in the pan. For leaner cuts, use a fat with a high smoke point such as peanut or grapeseed oil, or clarified butter, depending on your taste preferences.

How are steak tips usually cooked? ›
