The state has been using the old Violent Apprehension Program for 10 years, and recently used it to link suspected serial killer Angel Maturino Resendiz to three murders, said Mike Scott, chief of criminal law enforcement for DPS. "It's a great tool in not only identifying a common suspect, but common cases. It was very beneficial in the Resendiz case," Scott said. "Even though we had the suspect, it started to bring in other cases that he may have been involved with." Maturino Resendiz was indicted last week on a capital murder charge for the slaying of a Houston-area physician at her home last December.

Study: Antitheft systems safe for heart devices DALLAS- People with implanted defibrillators can walk through antitheft systems like those at stores and libraries without fear of getting an extra shock to the heart if they don't linger, a study found. The research follows last year's warning by the Food and Drug Administration that electromagnetic fields emitted by metal detectors and antitheft systems can in rare instances interfere with implanted devices such as defibrillators and pacemakers. The new study looked only at defibrillators and antitheft systems, not metal detectors. Circus elephant dies suddenly near Houston HOUSTON A 4-year-old elephant with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum Bailey Circus died near Houston, circus officials said Monday. Benjamin, an Asian elephant, died suddenly while playing and bathing in a pond on private property, according to a statement.
